Instagram hashtag limit in 2026: 5 per post, and what schedulers still allow
Instagram allows 5 hashtags per post or reel since December 18, 2025, down from 30. What its help centre says, what the API still lists, and how to pick five.

Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags in a post or a reel. It cut the limit from 30 on December 18, 2025, when its @creators account announced that “Starting today, Instagram will allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post”. Its help centre now says that a post with more than 5 hashtags won’t go through. Meta’s developer reference, which schedulers and other apps follow, still lists 30.
The rules below come from Instagram’s own announcement and help centre and Meta’s developer documentation, checked on October 17, 2026, plus the code SocialHelper runs to check a caption before it posts it.
The Instagram hashtag limit at a glance
A hashtag is a word or phrase after a # sign that links a post to a page of public posts with the same tag. The hashtag limit is the most hashtags Instagram accepts on one post. It isn’t the same everywhere Instagram publishes it.
| Where | Limit | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram’s announcement | 5 | “up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post”, from December 18, 2025 |
| Instagram Help Center | 5 | More than 5 tags on a photo or video won’t post |
| Meta’s developer reference | 30 | A caption can have 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags |
| SocialHelper’s check | 30 | Follows the developer reference |
Instagram’s @creators account posted the change on Instagram and on Threads (Instagram’s @creators).
What changed, and when
Before the change, Meta’s documentation allowed 30 hashtags in a caption, and its developer reference still does. Instagram then tested lower limits for about a year, with many accounts limited to 3 in the last test, according to Social Media Today. On December 18, 2025, it settled on 5. Instagram told creators it “will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five”. It explained that “using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram” (Social Media Today).
Instagram’s help centre has caught up. It now says “You can use up to 5 tags on a post”, and that if you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, it won’t post. The same 5 applies to feed posts and reels.
What counts as a hashtag on Instagram
- Where they go: Instagram’s help centre says you can add hashtags in the caption or in the comments of your post (Instagram Help: Use hashtags).
- Characters: “Numbers are allowed in hashtags. However, spaces and special characters, like $ or %, won’t work.” A hashtag ends at the first space or symbol, so #summersale works and #summer sale tags only “summer”.
- Visibility: A hashtag page is the page that lists public posts with one tag. Posts from private profiles don’t appear there, so a hashtag only helps discovery on a public account.
- Ownership: You can tag only your own posts, not other people’s.
SocialHelper counts a # at the start of a word, followed by letters, digits or underscores, as one hashtag. So #summer2026 counts as one, every repeat of the same tag counts again, and the # in C# doesn’t count.
The hashtag limit for schedulers and the API
Schedulers, social media tools and AI assistants post to Instagram through Meta’s Instagram API. Its developer reference still describes a caption as “Maximum 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags” (Instagram Platform: IG User Media). Meta’s error codes repeat the same 30 for captions that break the rules (Instagram Platform: Error codes). Meta hasn’t documented whether posts made through the API are held to 5.
SocialHelper checks every Instagram caption against the developer reference before anything is queued: up to 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ mentions. A caption over any of them gets a clear message, such as “The caption has 31 hashtags; Instagram allows 30”, and isn’t scheduled. That check won’t stop a caption with 6 to 30 hashtags, though, so keep to 5 yourself. The Instagram character counter counts a caption the way Instagram does.
Do hashtags still work on Instagram?
Hashtags still sort your post, but they no longer bring much reach on their own. Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, said in February 2025 that hashtags “don’t work” to increase reach, as Social Media Today reported. In May 2025 he called them “a great way to let people know what a post is about and connect posts”. A tag that names your topic helps people who search for it or follow it find the post.
How to choose your 5 hashtags
- Start with what the post is about. Name the topic, the product or the place, such as #sourdough or #torontofood, rather than tags that fit any post.
- Prefer specific tags over generic ones. For a bread post, #sourdoughbaking says more than #food, and that’s the kind of targeted tag Instagram asks for.
- Write each tag as one word. Leave out spaces and symbols like $ or %, which end the tag.
- Post from a public account. Private posts don’t appear on hashtag pages.
- Count before you schedule. Five hashtags take part of the 2,200-character caption too, and a scheduler may still allow 30, so check the count yourself. For when to post, see the best time to post on Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 5 hashtag rule on Instagram?
It’s Instagram’s limit of 5 hashtags per post or reel. Instagram announced it on December 18, 2025, replacing the old limit of 30, and its help centre says a post with more than 5 hashtags won’t post.
How do I add more than 5 hashtags on Instagram?
You can’t. Instagram’s help centre says that if you include more than 5 tags on a photo or video, it won’t post. Pick the 5 that describe the post best and put the other ideas into the caption as plain words.
Is 4 hashtags too many?
No. Four is within the limit, and Instagram itself recommends using up to 5 targeted hashtags instead of many generic ones. Use as many as describe the post well, up to 5.
Why is Instagram not letting me use hashtags?
Usually because the post has more than 5 of them, or a tag has a space or a symbol such as $ or % in it. If your hashtags post but never show up on hashtag pages, check whether your account is private, since private posts don’t appear there.
When did Instagram limit hashtags to 5?
On December 18, 2025. Instagram’s @creators account said that day that Instagram “will allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post”, after about a year of testing lower limits.
How we checked
We analyzed Instagram’s announcement, its help centre and Meta’s developer documentation on October 17, 2026, then ran a fact check of every limit and quote on this page against them. The limits SocialHelper checks are read from its Instagram integration, the code that checks each caption before it goes out, so this page changes when that code does. For every other caption limit, see social media character limits, and for photo sizes, Instagram post sizes.
