How it counts
How Mastodon counts characters.
It counts what you see, except that every link counts 23 and a mention of someone on another server counts only their @name.
- Links count 23 characters however long they are.
- @[email protected] counts as @alice, the part before the server.
- Emoji count 1, even ones built from several pieces.

FAQ
About the Mastodon limit
What is the Mastodon character limit?
A Mastodon post can be up to 500 characters. It counts what you see, except that every link counts 23 and a mention of someone on another server counts only their @name.
Do emoji count as one character on Mastodon?
Yes. Every emoji counts 1, even one built from several pieces, like a family.
Do links count toward the limit?
Yes, but every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counter runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves this page.
Why do counters disagree?
Many counters count every symbol as 1. Mastodon doesn’t, so their number can be off for emoji, links or other scripts. This one uses the same counting code SocialHelper runs before it posts to Mastodon.
Does SocialHelper check this before posting?
Yes. Every post is checked against these limits for each account before it goes out. If anything doesn’t fit, nothing is posted and you see every problem at once.
Post to Mastodon, checked first.
