Post to social media from Codex.
Add SocialHelper to Codex with an API key. It can then post, schedule and pull marketing reports for you, and it checks with you before anything goes out.
- Turn the README’s “What’s new” section into a LinkedIn post. Post it after I confirm.
- called list_accounts
- called validate_post
- Here’s the draft. It fits LinkedIn’s limit. Post it to Jane Doe now?
- Go ahead.
- called create_post
- called get_post
- Published. Here’s the link.
Setup
Connect it in 4 steps.
The Codex CLI, which reads MCP servers from ~/.codex/config.toml.

New to SocialHelper? Connecting an assistant, in the help center.
-
1
Create an API key
In the SocialHelper dashboard, open API & MCP and create a key. It starts with sh_ and is shown once, so copy it somewhere safe.
-
2
Add the server
Add this to ~/.codex/config.toml. Codex reads the key from the environment variable you name.
[mcp_servers.socialhelper] url = "https://socialhelper.app/mcp" bearer_token_env_var = "SOCIALHELPER_API_KEY" -
3
Set the key
Export SOCIALHELPER_API_KEY in the shell you run Codex from.
export SOCIALHELPER_API_KEY="YOUR_API_KEY" -
4
Try it
Ask: “List my SocialHelper accounts.” Codex calls list_accounts and shows the accounts you connected.
Things to ask
What you can ask for.
Talk to Codex the way you would to a colleague. These all work once your accounts are connected.
“Turn the README’s “What’s new” section into a LinkedIn post and post it once I confirm.”
“Schedule the same announcement on X and Threads for 9 am tomorrow.”
“Write a script that posts our weekly metrics summary through the SocialHelper API.”
“Which Google Ads campaigns brought in the most conversions this week?”
Before anything goes out
You stay in charge.
An assistant that can post for you should be careful about it. SocialHelper builds that in, whichever assistant you use.
- It asks before posting
- SocialHelper tells every assistant that posts are public, and to confirm the text and accounts with you before it publishes.
- Checked before it’s sent
- Each post is checked against every platform’s limits first. If anything doesn’t fit, nothing goes out and the assistant sees every problem at once.
- Never posted twice
- Retries only happen when nothing was published, so a hiccup never turns into a duplicate post.
- Revoke the key anytime
- Give Codex its own API key. Revoke that key on the API & MCP page and it loses access at once, without touching your other keys.
Limits
What Codex can do.
Codex gets 11 tools. Here’s what they cover, and what they deliberately leave out.
It can
- Post now, or schedule for later, to 12 platforms: Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok and more.
- Attach images and videos from a public link.
- Check each platform’s limits before posting, and fit the text to them.
- Edit or cancel a scheduled post before it goes out.
- Tell you whether a post went live, with its links, or why it failed.
- Read reports from Google Search Console, Google Analytics and Google Ads.
- Look up and draft content on your WordPress, WooCommerce and Ghost sites.
It can’t
- Connect or remove social accounts. You do that in the SocialHelper dashboard.
- Reach accounts in a team you didn’t connect it to.
- Delete a post that’s already live on the platform. Cancelling stops only what hasn’t gone out.
- Upload files from your computer. Give it a public link to the image or video instead.
FAQ
Questions about Codex.
Do I need an API key?
Yes. Codex sends a SocialHelper API key with each request. Create one on the API & MCP page and give Codex its own, so you can revoke it on its own.
Who can connect Codex?
The team’s owner or an admin, since connecting takes permission to manage API keys. Codex can then use every account connected to that team.
Will Codex post without asking me?
SocialHelper tells Codex to show you the text and the accounts and wait for your yes before it posts. Scheduled posts can still be edited or cancelled until they go out.
Which accounts can Codex post to?
The accounts connected in the team the API key belongs to.
Can Codex read my marketing data?
Yes, once you connect those accounts. It can run reports and lookups on Google Search Console, Google Analytics and Google Ads, such as your top search queries or sessions by page.
What does it cost?
SocialHelper is free during early access. Codex may need a particular plan of its own for custom connections; check OpenAI’s documentation.
