How to post to social media from ChatGPT

Connect ChatGPT to your Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and other accounts, then draft, check and publish from a chat.

3 minute read By SocialHelper team

ChatGPT is good at writing posts. Getting them onto your accounts is the tedious part: copy, open each app, paste, fix the bits that are too long, attach the image again. With SocialHelper connected, ChatGPT can do that last step itself, after you’ve approved the text. This guide covers the setup, what to ask, and how to keep control of what gets published.

What you need

  • A ChatGPT plan that lets you add custom MCP servers with developer mode. OpenAI’s help article lists which plans can and what each can do.
  • A SocialHelper account, with your social accounts connected in the dashboard. It works with Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, Telegram, Discord, Tumblr, Bluesky and Mastodon.
  • The owner or admin role in your SocialHelper team, since connecting an app takes permission to manage API keys.

Connect ChatGPT

  1. Open Plugins in ChatGPT. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select the + button, then Add custom MCP server. If that option is missing, turn on developer mode in ChatGPT’s settings first. In a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin may have to allow it.
  2. Describe the server. Name it SocialHelper. Under Connection, choose the public endpoint and paste the address below. Keep OAuth as the authentication: ChatGPT finds SocialHelper’s sign-in settings by itself. https://socialhelper.app/mcp
  3. Create it. Read the risk notice, tick “I understand and want to continue”, then select Create as a plugin.
  4. Sign in and pick a team. ChatGPT opens SocialHelper. Log in, choose the team whose accounts ChatGPT may use, and select Connect.
  5. Use it in a chat. Start a new chat, type @ and pick SocialHelper. Then ask: “List my SocialHelper accounts.”

ChatGPT now acts as you in the team you picked. It never sees an API key or a password.

Your first post

Start with something low-stakes, and name the accounts so there’s no guessing:

Write a short post for our LinkedIn page and our Bluesky account announcing that the shop is closed on Monday for the holiday. Show me both before posting.

Usually ChatGPT lists your connected accounts first, then writes the drafts and checks them against each platform’s limits with validate_post. It then shows you the drafts with the accounts they’ll go to. Nothing is published until you say yes. SocialHelper’s server tells every assistant to confirm the text and the accounts with you first, because posts are public.

When you reply “post them”, ChatGPT publishes and then checks the result, so it can give you the live links or tell you which account failed and why.

Posts with a photo

Attach a photo to your message, or ask ChatGPT to make one, and ask it to post with the image. ChatGPT passes the file to SocialHelper directly, so it doesn’t need to be online anywhere first. Instagram needs an image or video on every post, so this is how you post there from a chat.

Scheduling instead of posting now

Add a time and the post is scheduled instead of published:

Schedule this for Thursday at 9 am Toronto time on LinkedIn and Facebook.

Saying the time zone avoids surprises. If you’ve set weekly posting times in SocialHelper, you can ask ChatGPT to “add it to the queue” and the post takes the next free slot. Until a minute before it goes out, you can ask ChatGPT to change the text, the time or the accounts, or to cancel it.

Tips that save a round trip

  • Name the accounts and platforms you want. “Post it everywhere” works, but you’ll want to check the list it shows you.
  • Ask for a different version per platform when the lengths differ a lot, such as a long LinkedIn post and a short one for X or Bluesky.
  • If ChatGPT says it can’t find SocialHelper, start a new chat and pick it with @ again.
  • Ask “what failed?” after a post. ChatGPT can read each account’s status and the reason a platform gave.

Disconnecting

ChatGPT appears under Connected apps on the API & MCP page in SocialHelper. Disconnect it there and it loses access straight away. The full setup reference, with example prompts, is on the ChatGPT page.

Post everywhere from one place.
